Stick Pounding Workshops

Urban Homeschoolers is excited–and honored–to kick off the new academic year with a rousing celebration of community led by vocal activist, Melanie DeMore, with two fun events.

Stick Making Party

First we gather to welcome everyone back and to make our pounding sticks. We supply the sticks and the fabric. You supply elbow grease and energy. Let’s see how many sticks we can make so that we can really raise the roof!

This event takes place during the Welcome Back meeting.

Gullah Stick Pounding Ceremony

We create a foot stomping, hand-clapping rhythmic community and combine it with singing spirituals and songs of protest and peace. Participants learn about Gullah/Geechee culture through it’s dynamic music and rhythmic heart. We, as a community, turn the whole place into a living, breathing drum.
Friday, September 15th,  6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
