The history of St. Stephens Indian School extends over 120 years. A Jesuit priest from Buffalo, New York, established St. Stephens in order to provide education for Arapahoe students living on the Wind River Reservation. As our community and schools developed, the Indian peoples came to be in charge of both the community and the schools. The Bureau of Indian Affairs provides financing, and the Bureau of Indian Education offers assistance.

Our principals, teachers, and staff did a fantastic job making sure that school was held in a safe environment today. As you have no doubt noticed, there was a strong law enforcement presence at both campuses, and every entry was protected. Bunker Hill is lucky to have such committed first responders, and the Macoupin County Sheriff's Office, the City of Bunker Hill, and the Bunker Hill Police Department all worked together in a very thorough and competent manner. In order for us to respond to the issue appropriately, we would also like to thank the several students and parents who volunteered information with us.
