Eight phases of psychological development were outlined by Erik Erikson in his 1950 book Childhood and Society, along with an age range for which he believed the difficulties to be most pressing. As Erikson put it, a "Psychosocial Crisis" is a struggle that a person must overcome at each stage of life.
