Let’s Read, Learn, and Play together! In this unique mixed ages and skill leveled class, students get twice the fun to focus on their reading skills with Miss Kirsten and Miss Julie. Whether online or in person, this class is designed to begin with mixed group time before breaking out for individual skill leveled learning. Beginner readers work with Miss Julie using a variety of early readers, videos, and games to grow and strengthen their phonemic awareness, sight word recognition, and simple sentence and paragraph reading fluidity. Intermediate readers work with Miss Kirsten. Her group discusses setting, inferences, comparing and contrasting, characters, theme, cause and effects, predictions, point of view, and conflicts and resolutions. Every book opens the opportunity to do art activities and we can journal our progress. We choose our books depending on their online availability and the composition of the class. We are prepared to work online or in the classroom. This class meets twice a week.

In this class, we will be exploring the classic elements of storytelling and gradually building our own short narratives through both drawings and written words. Some other works will be studied and analyzed, including short stories, poems, comics, and essays.  This class will function both in person and remotely through zoom and emailed reading materials. When done remotely, the class will shift focus to shorter form writing as opposed to longer term story building projects.  Spelling and grammar will not be emphasized in this class, the focus will instead be on conveying ideas through stylized writing and drawing.

Word Play is a fun and outside the box approach to build and strengthen reading and writing skills. Intended for the beginner reader, Word Play uses games, manipulatives and art to allow a more creative approach to both introduce new skills, as well as, create a desire to “practice” on their own time in the form of play.
