Let’s Get Messy

Let’s Get Messy

This club meets weekly on Tuesday afternoons and is divided into 2 groups: one for Early Elementary and one for Late Elementary kids. We will meet outside!

Once a month the book club includes a craft. We also spend one meeting doing a science experiment and one meeting for a craft project that you might not want to do at home. Some of these might go for more than one club meeting. We play games that need a lot of participants. We intend to keep this fun for the kids and leave room to stick with a project they are enjoying, or to move on right away if they are not!

Our first club meeting is a planning meeting to find out what books the kids recommend and what experiments and projects they might like to do. Mara has years’ worth of ideas but wants to include the kids in the planning.

Book Club for ages 12+

Book Club 12+

This club meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month outside on the Urban Homeschoolers campus. We read one novel per month or a couple of short stories or poems. At our first meeting in September, we get book recommendations from students and then set the reading schedule for the year.

This is a club, not a class!! It is for the kids to have a chance to share their ideas and opinions about literature in a more casual setting. We may do craft projects or games related to the themes of the stories. We would love to do a story-themed snack potluck but may not be able to do this due to COVID restrictions.

This book club aims for more appropriate material for younger teens and tweens than the High School Book Club. By setting our list for the year, parents may opt-out if there is a book they prefer their student does not read.

Teens4Teens

Teens4Teens

This club is run by one of our own teens, Lorelei Leary! She runs her own nonprofit organization, also called Teens4Teens. This group works to learn about and to help foster kids in their teens and as they age out of the foster care system since these groups are often overlooked.

This club meets on Wednesdays at 11am and Fridays at 4pm weekly. This is to help high school-age students fit Teens4Teens into their busy schedules. Lorelei will be covering the same material at both meetings each week. It is not necessary to attend both meetings.

Conversation Club

Conversation Club

Our country and world are so divided that speaking to someone who disagrees with you has become difficult. Name-calling and arguing are rampant. We would like to foster a more civil society in our small way! Let’s get together and practice politely discussing controversial topics!

This club begins in October, the day and time are to be determined. This club will meet outside on the Urban Homeschoolers campus.
