We watch characters come alive as we read various chapter books. Mercy Watson to the Rescue by Kate DiCamillo, is a charming book about a pig that is treated like a child and the fun results of that behavior. Also we read My Father’s Dragon about someone who hears about a baby dragon in trouble, and sets out with gum, lollipops and rubber bands to Wild Island on a rescue mission. Besides enjoying many great stories, we discuss setting, inferences, comparing and contrasting, characters, theme, cause and effects, predictions, point of view, and conflicts and resolutions. Every book opens the opportunity to do plays, art activities, and journal our progress. We choose other books depending on the nature and composition of the students in the class.

Through games, videos and storytelling, students will master phonics to improve their reading skills. Phonics is a method of teaching children to read by linking sounds (phonemes) and the symbols that represent them (graphemes, or letter groups). A phonics approach teaches children to decode words by sounds, rather than recognizing whole words. The goal of phonics instruction is to teach students the most common sound-spelling relationships so that they can decode, or sound out, words. This decoding ability is a crucial element in reading success.

Read stories and create vocabulary lists from the stories we read. Explore the basic letters of cursive and practice early penmanship. Students will often take turns to create their own sentences that the rest of the class will copy into their notebooks/binders. Children will have in-depth conversations on the history and function of certain words and why we use them the way we do. Bring more meaning to words!
